![]() ![]() The events in the book occur in short enough a time so that things don't become utterly ridiculous and unbelievable, yet there is still a subtle sense of "Weekend at Bernie's" that underlies the whole ordeal. ![]() The older brother character, Ken, is quite nonchalant about the whole situation, and calmly solves problems as one well-meaning sticky-beak after another threatens to ruin the charade. I thoroughly enjoyed this short tale, in which Satsuki wryly narrates her experience as a corpse, being dragged (quite literally) from pillar to post by her young friends as they try to escape detection. Given that this is a translation, I'm not entirely sure if the translation is a bit clunky or the original voice of the story is simply cold and detached. This is an absolutely ripper, quirky little gem of a tale. She then narrates the tale of how her murderous friend and the friend's brother attempt to hide her body so as not to get into trouble. ![]() Satsuki is playing in a tree with her friend, when she is pushed off the branch, falls and dies. ![]()

![]() Unfortunately, this trait was never shown again in the rest of the book. In the beginning, Dannie liked numbers and that is demonstrated in the first chapter as she narrates how she lives her life through quantities and counting. Dannie’s character had room to grow after seeing this window into the future but concerning inconsistencies in character development short changed the reader. The idea of experiencing an hour of your life five years in the future intrigued me – though as I continued to read on, I was displeased with Serle’s execution. That is until four and a half years later when she meets her best friend’s new boyfriend, the mysterious man she had met in her apartment during her future visit. ![]() Although she is only there for an hour, when she returns to real-time, Dannie struggles to move on with her life and forget the future that keeps popping up in her mind. There, she finds herself in a different apartment, with a different ring on her finger, and a stranger sitting next to her. In Five Years focuses on the life of Dannie Kohan, who, just after she nails an interview for her dream job and gets engaged, falls asleep and awakens five years in the future. ![]() As with most of the books I read, the synopsis of In Five Years by Rebecca Serle, immediately itched my need to snuggle up and read a good book for the entire afternoon. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The tentacles are found everywhere in Lovecraft’s fiction Black protagonists are not. The signature poster of the show features the actors Jurnee Smollett and Jonathan Majors, octopoid tentacles flickering around their faces. Promoting the HBO show Lovecraft Country, the advertisements seemed to suggest that Lovecraft, who died in 1937 in penury in his hometown of Providence, Rhode Island, had finally returned home as an unofficial monarch, king of a genre of horror writing that, especially in the past decade, has provoked an energetic wave of new fiction inspired by Lovecraft’s trailblazing example.īut the devil, in Lovecraft’s case, is in the details. ![]() Lovecraft died of intestinal cancer, having published in his lifetime only one book, riddled with printing errors, his name appeared on billboards throughout the United States. ![]() |
